My name is Mindy DeGraffenried. I am married to my wonderful web programmer, Jared and am mommy to my sweet children, Emma, Cameron (step-son, so I can't claim his birth!), Scott, Eliza, Brigham, and Gabriel. My first four children were born in a hospital setting using most of the typical interventions. Of course I was thrilled to have my babies in my arms but each experience left me a bit empty. I knew there had to be a better way. I knew I was capable of fulfilling one of my main purposes on this earth as a more active participant.
When I discovered that I was expecting my fifth child, I decided it was time to make the change. I was counseled by many to just go with what I knew. Well, I KNEW I wanted something different! I did as most women do when they take ownership and responsibility of something-I studied! In the process of educating myself, I found Hypnobabies. My husband and I attended our classes and practiced regularly. For the first time in my life, I enjoyed true relaxation. It helped tremendously with my depression and anxiety. I was confident when dealing with anemia, calm when turning my breech baby, prepared when needing to treat my Group B Strep, and unaware that I was delivering a posterior baby! My sweet boy was born in my bedroom with my husband to catch him. I relaxed so much that he came after only three hours with no pain. I was not “checked” once during my entire pregnancy and had no idea when I went through "transition." Since my average labor previously was 15 hours, we were certain my midwife would have plenty of time to arrive at my delivery. She made it about 20 minutes After his birth! What a wonderful surprise to enjoy such a healing, miraculous event.
Soon after my amazing delivery, I had the opportunity to act as a Hypno-doula for my sister in her first birth. Prior to her birthing time, I helped her through a Hypnobabies home-study course and did a birth rehearsal with her. I spent 12 hours in her home using the scripts learned in my Hypnobabies class to keep her relaxed. I physically and emotionally held her up and supported her through the entire process. When her baby presented acynclitic (head side-ways), her midwife assured us that if we were in the hospital, she would have labored, if allowed, for at least 36 hours and likely be sent off to have a C-section! Though her pushing stage was difficult, during the earlier hours of her birthing time she looked like she was sleeping! She was ecstatic that she had done it. She attributes much of her success to the Hypnobabies program. At that time, I found part of my mission. I was comfortable and confident in my role and all those present agreed that this is what I needed to do. My husband saw the light in my eyes when I considered becoming a Hypnobabies instructor. He supported me in my pursuit and I was able to complete my training in July 2008.
It is an honor to work with women and their partners during such an important time in their lives. I am passionate about Hypnobabies and know that it can help create a peaceful birth for babies and an incredible experience for their parents!
